After a nineteen year absence from Pwllheli the Firefly fleet were delighted to take to the water for the GJW Direct nationals today, the 24th August.
After an evening of storms made the journey interesting for many competitors, Saturday dawned with a fresh northerly breeze and broken sunshine. More than half the competitors made it to the start gate for today’s rehearsal and after a practice practice race start the practice race finally got underway in 20-25 knots. A few breakages ensued but mostly the fleet coped well with relatively flat water and enjoyed some splendid reaches against the stunning Snowdonia backdrop.
Class chairman Steve Greaves and his crew Caroline Edwards, also class chairman, led the fleet round the course after it paid to go hard right on the first beat. The pair finished so far in the lead that they couldn’t identify the boat in second!
