Racing was cancelled today at the GJW Direct Firefly National Championships due to gales and two metre seas.

However, the Firefly class never lets a day go by without excitement and discourse, so there follows a brief report of the class Annual General Meeting.

At a lively meeting with over forty members present subjects as varied as family membership rules, attracting new sailors, the class racing circuit, and jib hanks.

The two ‘big ticket’ items requiring a vote were the sanctioning of electronic compasses (heading only) and the permitting of an internal stiffening option involving 4mm veneers instead of longitudinal stringers. Both proposals were passed with a large majority.

The other highlight was watching the Treasurer delivering the annual accounts wearing the daily Duckhams Nearly-Sunk costume. This prestigious dress-and-external-underwear combo is awarded daily for gross or significant over-or-under-achievement (on or off the water) and thankfully for the class it was over-achievement on this occasion. To find out more you need to come to a Firefly champs (2013, Torquay, 27 July to 2 August)

Full details of the AGM can be discussed in the usual place, – the Firefly website discussion forum – and of course a report will be circulated to all members via the class Bulletin magazine.
