Twenty four Fireflies met at Restronguet Sailing Club as is customary on the late May bank holiday for a very memorable South Western Area Championship
Perfect conditions rewarded the fleet, roughly half from the home club plus a dozen or so visitors. Saturday and Sunday saw racing in unbroken sunshine, testing spring tides and a gutsy force 3. The McEwen family team romped home with a string of top three results. Many of the other places were decided only by the final race which was held on Monday in a very exciting 25 knot southerly in fair size seas.
On Saturday afternoon the single-handed championships were awarded, 15 boats started, the highest number for many years. Many competitors had driven down on the day and already sailed two races, but the conditions were too good to pass. Jamie Mcewen and Guy Davison held the top two spots until the last leg where in a dying breeze Stuart Hudson overtook them and is now both double-handed and single-handed champion!
