The Firefly fleet made the annual bank holiday pilgrimage to Restronguet Sailing Club, for the customary warm welcome, a long weekend of sunshine and fantastic racing; for both the SW area championships and the Firefly single handed championships. As a real family event; the younger members were entertained with beach activities and a regatta fleet of Mirrors and Oppies.
Summary of the racing:
Saturday: light shifting winds.
Race 1: Barney Smith and Audrey Knight proved the value of reading the sailing instructions, finishing correctly whilst the two boats previously leading headed of elsewhere.
Race 2: Local stars Ben Lumby and Liz Evans took the win demonstrating their intentions for the event, followed by Roger Morris and son Finian.
Sunday: A bit more breeze similar shifts.
Race 3: Dave and Betty Sincock won the closest race of the event, ahead of Stuart and Jane Hudson with the first 5 boats finishing less than 30 seconds later!
Race 4: Ben and Liz won their second race, taking the race from Mark Tait and Sally Wakefield on the last beat.
Going into the final day, Ben and Liz held the lead, followed jointly by Jamie and Jo McEwan and Guy Davidson and Amy Bowden.
The single handed championship race: relinquished on the last run by Roger Morris allowing Nigel Wakefield to win his only race of the weekend having been relieved of beach/parenting duties.
Monday: a bit windier, still as shifty.
Race 5: Jamie and Jo, won from Ben and Liz.
The final race 6: Mark and Sally won, from Jamie and Jo, Ben and Liz came home 4th as very popular winners of the event.
