c 2003 – Charlie Meyer, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.
In October 2011, Charlie Meyer sent pictures of this Firefly, which were published in the Autumn edition of the NFA Bulletin. He also told of his purchase of his Firefly:
“I thought I would tell you a little about my purchase. It was a complete whim and serendipity. I saw a classified ad for a wooden sailboat in excellent condition in Ohio (four hundred miles away). I saw pictures that indicated a nearly new looking wooden boat and spars with a trailer. And what seemed a very reasonable price.
So, I hitched up my two axle flatbed trailer and went to take a look. It turned out to be a case where the husband had too many “toys” and the wife wanted the boat GONE or else she planned to turn it into a coffee table for the living room. I’m not making this up, the wife did really like the boat, she just wanted to be able to put her car into the garage so she offered the alternative of selling the boat or converting it into a coffee table. It didn’t take me long to decide to buy ‘Finnock’ under these circumstances!
A Firefly “fire sale” as it were!
I had no logical reason to be buying “Finnock”, other than my love of boats, wooden boats in particular and the price. I have a 17′ O’Day Daysailor (in grp) and a 1969 Sparkman and Stevens Whitney 30, designed by Olin Stephens (in need of much attention) and also an Ontario (Canada) built cedar on oak French river fishing/utility outboard (in as pristine condition as “Finnook”) and acquired under much the same circumstances.
During this period of acquisition, my family has moved from Massachusetts to New Jersey to Virginia where I will soon have the space to store, maintain, and restore “my fleet”.
It is not clear when “Finnock” will the sea again, but at least she is not a coffee table and she is appreciated. I guess, for the time being, she is part of my museum”
From correspondence between another owner in the USA (January 2015), and the NFA Boat Register, it seems “Finnock” is still in the care of Charlie.
A picture of her can be found under the entry for F2210, quite how it got there remains something of a mystery, but will hopefully be moved shortly
