History
September 2024 – Andrew Pool, F3143, Falmouth, has supplied this memory of sailing F3146 in 1985
“We was robbed”
David Gorrod kindly lent me Spaghetti for the 1985 National Championships in Plymouth (hosted by Mayflower SC) and Mimie Currey came as my crew, neither having sailed a Firefly for a few years. The Gore race for which Mimie helmed, was in the open water outside the Plymouth Breakwater
It was a long day of light weather. From our position in the early teens, we watched Chris and Karen Lewis (F1943 Castaways) defending their lead from Phil and Jilly Slater (F3193 Restronguet SC) throughout the race. When the Gore did not count for points, the fleet would spread out on such a day and diminish as boats peeled away from the back, and at the last leeward mark, nearest the breakwater, we too contemplated going home. Instead, we decided to carry on but not go the same way as the others. The leaders had gone left throughout the race ; we went right. Soon a little black cloud appeared over Cawsand Bay, and we were both sitting out comfortably on a freeing tack while the fleet was still almost becalmed on the other side of the course, perhaps a quarter of a mile ahead. By the time the wind reached them, we could have crossed the leaders on starboard as we approached the finishing line – had not the committee boat up – anchored and moved away from us in the final moments.
We bore away under its stern and finished a close third
Should we have sought redress? Mimie had won the Sir Richard Fairey points trophy but never the Gore, unlike her Brother, Alastair. It had already been denied her on another occasion . Chris was certain he was always ahead of us ; Phil said he had not seen us until the last moment. That would have been their evidence
We did not seek redress. had we done so, I believe the Protest Committee would have awarded us second place. As in the America’s Cup, there is only one place worth having in the Gore. Had we succeeded in having the race thrown out, we would not have been popular with the fleet – nor would the Race Officer – and on current form we would have finished in the early teens in the resailed race . Later, when I discussed it with Charles Currey, of blessed memory, he thought we should have done. What would have been the Race Officer’s evidence?
As for me, I had realised long before middle age that my destiny was not to play Fly Half for England – but might have won the Gore on a flyer? Or was the Almighty ensuring Chris and Karen had their just desserts?
